Vertis M. Holt, 80, of Elyria, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, in the comfort of her home. She was born in Mt. Holly, Arkansas, and moved to Elyria 53 years ago from Chicago, Illinois. Vertis was a graduate of Columbia High School and attended UAPB and Philander Smith University. She worked for Invacare for 35 years before retiring in 2005. Following her retirement, she continued her career at Target, where she dedicated another 15 years before retiring again in 2023.
Vertis was a devoted member of Unity Baptist Church in Elyria. She had a passion for baking and enjoyed watching basketball and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Crystal Holt of Lorain and her Godson Alex E. Washington III (Devanne) of Chicago, her granddaughter, Te’Leah Turner of Lorain; her grandson, Freshus Turner of Lorain; her sister, Vera Lawson of Elyria; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Vertis was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Holt; her father, Joseph Lawson; her mother, Christeen Brown; her sisters, Nettie Faye, Ruby Dean, and Edna Lawson; and her brother, Troy Lawson.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at Unity Baptist Church, located at 326 Fuller Road, Elyria, Ohio. The Rev. Willie Gardner, Pastor, will officiate.
Burial will take place at Brookdale Cemetery.
