Velma Camel Obituary

Velma A. Camel (nee Moore) was born August 1, 1946, in Elyria, OH to the late Irene (Mitchell) and William R. Moore, Sr.  She fought a good fight, battling health issues for the past 4 ½ years. With her faith in Christ, she departed this life on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

Velma accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was a 50+ year member of Second Baptist Church, Elyria, Ohio.  She was an original member of the Gospel Choir.  She served on the Culinary Committee and Trustee Board faithfully until her health began to fail in 2019.  She loved the Lord, her family and helping others.

She was a 1964 graduate of Elyria High School.  She retired from Columbia Gas of Ohio, after 30 years of service.  Also, Ms. V was the co- owner of Camel Lounge until 2004.  Velma was married to the late John Camel for 37 years. Velma enjoyed card games, traveling with friends and Pepsi Cola.  Petite, stylish, elegant, and spunky, when she entered the room, this little person made a huge impression on everyone she met.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: 2 brothers, Kenneth (Linda) Mitchell, William R. (Sondra) Moore, of Elyria, OH; 3 sisters, Jane Richardson, Janet Nieves and Joanne Fitzpatrick, of Elyria, OH.  A stepdaughter, S. Dawn White (Eric Durham) of Cleveland, OH. 2 step-grandsons. 2 Brother in-laws, Napoleon Camel, and William Hill, of Greensboro, AL.; 3 sister in-laws, Gilda (William) Thaxton, of Southfield, MI, Gwen Camel and Eileen Reed-Capers, of Elyria, OH; Very Special Friends, Burl J. Woodruff, of Lorain, OH, The Queens of Hearts- Rosemary Maxwell, and Sarah O’Dell of Elyria, OH and Marlene Wingard of Chattanooga, TN. Many nieces and nephews. The very Special Nieces that carved a special space in her heart Debra Bell, and Umecka Collins, of Birmingham, AL; Tara (James) Larsen, of Queen Creek, AZ; and Patricia VanHook, of Brooklyn, NY.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Camel, her parents, John & Irene Reed, William R. Moore, Sr. & Flossie Wilson; and 2 brothers: John W. Reed and Robert A. Reed.

Visitation will be Wednesday March 20, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. at the Second Baptist Church 427 Chapman Lane, Elyria, with the Rev. Dr. Carl P. Small officiating. Interment will be at Brookdale Cemetery, Elyria, OH.
