Thomas Franklin Barbee

Thomas Barbee, 88 of Oberlin, passed away Thursday, October 28, 2021 at Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Avon, Ohio, surrounded by family. Thomas was born in Ripley, Tennessee to the late Harbert and Mary Odell Barbee. Thomas was born the oldest of ten children.

Thomas was educated in the Ripley City Schools prior to moving to Elyria, Ohio. He resided in Elyria 31 years prior to moving to Oberlin, OH. New Russia Township in December 1989.

Thomas worked at American Standards. He later worked and retired from Fisher Body General Motors in Elyria. After retiring from GM he was employed part time at Elyria Value City and Service Master in Oberlin.

Thomas enjoyed fishing, gardening, traveling, attending sporting events, and singing; participating in local community choirs over the years. He was an active member of Second Baptist Church participating in the Male Chorus. In past years he served as Chairman of the Trustee Board in the church. In the mid- 1960s, Thomas served as an assistant boy scout leader for troop #108, and he coached the Elyria West Eagles Little League Baseball team. He was a member of The Al Lalim Temple #223 the Masonic Order 33rd degree Mason and The Sidonia Lodge #93.

Thomas  is survived by his wife of 41 years Margaret (nee Johnson), and his children Charles (Denise) Barbee of Columbia, SC,  Donald Barbee of Elyria, OH, Gail ( Timothy) Whalen, Gloria (Phillipie) Motley of Columbus, OH, Christopher (Cheryl) Barbee of Durham NC,  Quinn (Elizabeth) Barbee of Elyria, OH. Elonzo Davis of Elyria, OH, Marco (Francesca) Barbee of Oberlin, OH, Kassandra Barbee of Oberlin, OH. He also leaves behind 8 siblings; James C Barbee, Edward (Darlene) Barbee, Larry (Charlene) Barbee of Oberlin, OH, Harvey (Jane) Barbee, Mary Horton, Barbara (Fred) Harris of Rockford, IL, Gladys Barbee, Bernice Williams. A host of grandchildren, great grandchildren,  great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harbert and Mary Odell Barbee, brother Lewis Barbee, and 2 grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday, November 12, 2021 at Second Baptist Church, 427 Chapman Lane, Elyria OH 44035. A masonic service will be held with family between 9:30-10a.m.  After which, a walk-through viewing will be held for friends of the family 10-11 am, followed by a Celebration of Life Ceremony. Pastor Carl P Small will officiate. Burial will be at New Russia Township cemetery in Oberlin. Social distancing and masks are required.
