Shirley Clemons Obituary

Shirley Jean Clemons was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1934.  She was the eldest of Luther Sr. and Ella Jones’ nine children.

She moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1952 and attended college, married and raised her family.  She was a dedicated employee of the US Postal Service for over 25 years.

Shirley was baptized in House of God Churches, in Jacksonville. Over the years, she joyously served in the Maranatha Seven Day Adventist (SDA) and Oberlin SDA and when in Jacksonville she served at the Ephesus SDA. She settled in at the Southeast Seventh Day Adventist Church where she was a devoted member.

Shirley had a laugh that was infectious, and others couldn’t help but laugh with her.  She was affectionately called SJC or mommy by her children. She had a passion for cooking and made the best macaroni and cheese!  She enjoyed music, watching football with her son, watching evangelical TV shows and attending church.  Next to worship, she enjoyed spending her time with family. She helped raise 7 brothers, 1 sister, 5 cousins, and then raised her 6 children and many of her grandchildren (she was very fond of them).  She was educated, smart, practical and of strong faith and those are the qualities she instilled in her children.

Shirley Jean Clemons passed away peacefully on July 10, 2024.  She was predeceased by her parents Luther and Ella Jones; sister Rosalee Jones; brothers, Luther Jones II, Lewis Jones, Allen Jones, and Arthur Jones.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory:  brothers, Rufus Jones, Kermit (Malva) Jones, and Glenn (Genobia) Jones; her daughters, Brenda Evans, Antoinette Stone, Yvette (Larry) Cook; E. Latrice Manning and Alisa (Denilson Chibuzo) Ikenwude; and her son, Tyrone P. (Loretta) Clemons; and stepdaughter Tonya (Rudy) Thorton.

Grandchildren: Juan Evans, Wakil Evans McClendon, Jameel (Naji) Evans, Earl Evans, Elaine Evans, Twylla Lozada, Joshua Stone, Reginald (Kelly) Clemons, Dominique Pratt, Dayna Clemons (Saron Dier), Tyrone M. (Brittany) Clemons, Kamra Clemons, Rhenda (Bernard) Kilonzo, Evonne Manning, Leonard South, Lorenza Myers Jr., and many great grandchildren and great, great-grandchildren, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

In honor of Mother Shirley, a Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 19, 2024, at 11:00 am, Southeast Seventh Day Adventist Church, 16602 Tarkington Ave. Cleveland, OH.
