In Loving Memory of Nehemiah Haynes, Jr.
Nehemiah Haynes, Jr. passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2022, in Avon Lake, Ohio. He was the second of seven children born to the late Sadie and Nehemiah Haynes, Sr. on October 25, 1952, in Oberlin, Ohio. He was a lifelong learner.
After graduating from Oberlin High School, Nehemiah attended Bowling Green State University and later Kent State University where he earned a degree in Biology in 1981. He spent many hours of his leisure time in the public library, staying abreast of current events, enabling him to converse intelligently on many topics. He loved his Country and his Community. After serving his country as a Navy seaman, Nehemiah was employed by Ohio Edison as a member of the water quality control team. Later, he worked for the Lorain County Correctional Institute as a guard and served as a substitute teacher in the Lorain County School Districts. Nehemiah was a member of the local VFW in Parma, Ohio, a volunteer for the Salvation Army and a proud member of the Akron Branch of the NAACP. He Loved His Family. Nehemiah treasured most the time he spent with family. He was always available to help at gatherings with his siblings and made time to pour love and positive messages into the lives of his numerous nieces and nephews. Nehemiah enjoyed spending time watching sports and exchanging comments over the phone with his sister Kathy.
Nehemiah leaves to cherish his memory a son, Nehemiah Haynes III, and stepchildren Michael and Michelle Pippens; siblings Mary Zinimon, Lena (Dale) Kimmey, Kathy Haynes, Judi (Gregory) Hill, Russell Haynes, Eugene (Marsha) Shumate and Carlton Shumate. He will be fondly remembered by his nieces and nephews; Angela (Juan) Henry, Koia Kimmey, Kea (Carlos) Lauchu, Ariss Bevly, DaJoune Grantham, Kristen (Eddie) Henson, Terrell Williams, Brandon Hill, Eugene Shumate Jr. and Ryan Shumate; great nieces and nephews Antonio, Alfonso, Anais, Xavier, Ojani, Essien, Xochitl, Zion, Aaron, Nia, Hezekiah, Brayden, Maycen, Caydence, Arianna, Kaiden, Sania and Amina.
Nehemiah Haynes, Jr. was proceeded in death by his parents, Sadie and Nehemiah Haynes, Sr., and sister Theresa Grantham.
Special thanks to the staff of the Louis Stokes Veterans Medical Center for the continuous compassionate care provided to Nehemiah.
Service will be held 10:00 am, Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at Mt Zion Baptist Church in Oberlin, Ohio. Interment will be held at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery following the service.
