Mr. Melvin Nelson, 95, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2021, in the Wesleyan Village, Elyria, OH. He was born on November 10 1925.He was united in marriage on March 9, 1946 to Elizabeth Flagg and to this union four sons were born: Henry, Melvin, Ray and Jerry. He was employed at Harshaw Chemical was the first African American Carpenter to join Carpenter Union Local 305 of Lorain County. He worked at many locations until 1987 when he retired.
Melvin enjoyed listening to Elizabeth play on the organ, quartet and gospel music, growing a large garden. .At 95 years old, Melvin was the patriarch of a five-generation family who will cherish his memory.
He is survived by Elizabeth, his soulmate and wife of 75 years; four loving sons: Henry Louis (Cookie) and Melvin Otis (Audrey) of Elyria, Ohio; Ray Van (Josephine) of Southfield, MI; and Jerry Lee of Cleveland, Ohio; one foster son Frank Finch (Sherry) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Melvin was proceeded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law Myrtle; three sisters Mary, Edna, and Silverine; and two brothers Cecil and Charles.
Family and Friends will be received on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, in the Bethany Baptist Church, 334 17th St., Elyria, OH 44035. A walk-thru will begin at 10:00AM until 11:00AM and the “Celebration of Life” will follow at 11:00AM. Rev. Dr. J. Howard Timmons, Sr. will officiate. Burial will be held at Brookdale Cemetery. Covid Safety is encouraged.
