Official Obituary of Kevis Maurice Scruggs

Kevis Maurice Scruggs, son of the late Deacon Thomas and Barbara Scruggs, was born on November 20, 1969.  Kevis went from labor to reward on April 16, 2026, following a brief illness. Kevis was surrounded by family.

A devoted father, son, brother, nephew, and beloved friend, Kevis was known for his patience, his kind and forgiving heart, and a charming personality.  But most of all, he was known for being a GREAT and DEDICATED FATHER.  Kevis was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, and graduated from Ashtabula High School in 1989.  He later moved to Lorain County, where he was a member of Second Baptist Church, Elyria, under the leadership of Rev. Carl P. and Leading Lady Sylvia D. Small.  Soon thereafter, he moved his membership to Community Baptist Church, Lorain, led by Pastor Rufus O. and Leading Lady Teresa Buchanan, which was his home church at the time of his passing.  One of Kevis’ passions was playing the drums for his church.  He also enjoyed serving in the culinary ministry.

Kevis loved spending time with his sons, serving faithfully at his home church in many capacities, and also working with the youth as a Youth Director in the Union District under Moderator Michael D. Small.  His hobbies included watching football and basketball, landscaping, and cooking.  Though he seemed quiet, he lived his life by the mantra of: “May the work I’ve done SPEAK for me”.

Kevis was preceded in death by his father, Deacon Thomas Scruggs and his mother Barbara Scruggs, maternal grandparents Henry and Ora Cole, and paternal grandparents Rev. Joseph Scruggs Sr. and Thelma Scruggs.

He leaves to cherish his memories his sons I’Mere Scruggs and Freddie “Dutchie” Anderson, a sister Tasheca O.B Young, (brother-in-love Deacon Antonio Young), “Spiritual Parents” Pastor Rufus O. and Leading Lady Teresa Buchanan, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, God-sisters and God-brothers.

His celebration of life will take place on Friday May 1, 2026, at Second Baptist Church, 427 Chapman Lane, Elyria, Ohio 44035, Rev. Carl P. Small, Pastor.  Wake: 5p-7p.  Home-going Celebration of Life Services begin at 7p. The committal and repast will be held at Second Baptist IMMEDIATELY following the services.
