John “Sam” Willie Whitfield, transitioned to heaven on January 25, 2022. Born April 28, 1937, to James and Amy (Jones) Whitfield. John was born in Elyria, Ohio. John lived in Oberlin for many years then moved to Elyria.
John gave his life to the Lord in 1980 where he remained a faithful Christian. John’s ministry was praying for and with others. John was a Chaplain at Allen Hospital in Oberlin where he shared his ministry and prayed for others. John worked for Oberlin College for many years and later worked for Ford Motor Company where he retired. John’s passion was fishing, detailing cars, reading his bible and most of all, talking to anyone who would listen about the bible and his God. John was a member of the Big “6” CB club in the 60’s and 70’s where he was known as Nighthawk 747.
John leaves to cherish his legacy daughters; Darlene (Tony) Sutton-Bey of Texas, Tanya Cleveland-Williams, Renee Cleveland-Harris both of Virginia. Jonnita Johnson of Ohio, Tina (Tim) Allgood of Ohio. Sons; Terry Cleveland of California, Shawn Cleveland of Ohio, Gary Montique of New York, Johnathan (Shannon) Whitfield Sr, of Ohio. Grandkids; Kevin (Jazmine) Watkins of Ohio, Stephon Hazelwood of Ohio, Mary Cleveland of California, Tanya (Adam) Hudson of Ohio, Alisha Harris of Virginia, Johnathan (Whitney) Whitfield Jr, of Ohio. Erik Whitfield of Ohio, Malachi Whitfield of Ohio, Tameka Anderson of St. Louis, Toni (Ahmed) Ali, Elijah Sutton-Bey, Anthony Sutton-Bey of Texas, Tiara Sutton-Bey of Hawaii. Ex-wife Sally Whitfield, Great grands, nieces, nephews & step grands.
John was preceded in death by, his parents James and Amy Whitfield, all his siblings Billy, Sylvia, Arthur, James & John Thomas.
A walk-through viewing will be Monday January 31st, 2022, at 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Carter Funeral Home 127 W Bridge St. Elyria Oh, 44035.
Family and friends may visit on Tuesday February 1st, 2022, at 10:00am until 11:00am followed by the “Celebration of Life” 11:00am at Grace Community Church 1908 W 20th St, Lorain Oh 44052.
