Celebrating the Life of Deacon James Taylor
Deacon James C Taylor, 79, of Lorain, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 5th, 2025, following a brief illness. He was born January 9th, 1946, in Andalusia, Alabama. Then resided in Lorain, Ohio after graduating from high school.
Deacon Taylor was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for 51 years. He also served as Chairman of the Deacon Board. Deacon Taylor helped build the new church at 3900 Clifton Ave, Lorain, Ohio by helping lay the church's foundation. He served on many church auxiliaries including the Choir, the Male Chorus, the Sunday School and WSAV Lorain Save Me Radio Ministry. Deacon Taylor was a great supporter of the church's radio station WSAV-LP 93.7 FM, where he took lead on hosting the monthly Lorain Singing Convention to help support the radio station. Deacon Taylor also served as the church maintenance worker and landscaper. Where help was needed, Deacon Taylor was there. If a member needed a ride to church, he would drive the church van to make sure the member made it to church. Deacon Taylor was also a member of various gospel singing groups, which included the Shi-Lites Gospel Singers, and he was the lead guitarist for the One Body Gospel Chorus and the Tones of Joy Gospel Singers.
Deacon Taylor was employed at the Lorain City Schools as a crossing guard for the past (9) years. In the community, Deacon Taylor had many friends, and he was well known as a great mechanic, a great landscaper and a great barber.
Deacon Taylor will be sadly missed by his wife of 15 years, Ethel (Merritt) Taylor, children: James Evans, Tamyra (Jamal) El, Jason Evans, James L Taylor, Mark Taylor, Jantz Merritt and Dominic Merritt, and special nephews David & Anthony Taylor. He also leaves to mourn his passing a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends, the Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church Family and the Tower family whom he loved.
Deacon Taylor was preceded in death by his parents Willie and Emma Taylor, six siblings and nephew Billy Joe Taylor and his son, Timothy Merritt.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday July 15th at 10am with the service beginning at 11am located at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church 3900 Clifton Ave Lorain, Ohio.
Burial will be at Brookdale Cemetery 41600 Oberlin Elyria Ave Elyria, Ohio.
