Irene Carter Obituary

Irene Carter, age 82, of Lorain, Ohio passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 17th, 2026.

Born on June 22nd, 1943, in Huntsville, Alabama, she was the beloved daughter of Viola and Willie Battle. She graduated from Clearview High School of Lorain, Ohio and went on to work at Angelica, Crystal Clear Dry Cleaning, Service Overall followed by in-home Childcare Provider for her grandchildren, family and friends for more than 35 years.  On December 25th, 1964, she married James Carter and together they built a life centered on love, family, and friendship.

Irene was known for her kindness, strength, humor, generosity, faith, creativity, etc. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, canning, crossword puzzles, bingo, bowling and playing pinochle and found great joy in family gatherings but most of all she loved her service as a church mother also functioning as church secretary, working in culinary service, pastoral care and preserving the church’s traditions.  Her greatest pride was her family, and she touched the lives of everyone who knew her.

She is survived by her husband James O. Carter Sr. and 3 Children: James Jr. (Pamela), John (Debbie), Shalanda, Lavisa Battle (honorary daughter) and 17 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. Siblings: Willie Battle Jr, (Peggy), Glenda Foster, Florida Battle, Ernest Battle (Lavenia), Sylvia Young (Robert), Joe Martin, Great Aunt Janie Burnette and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by daughter Niyokia Carter. Granddaughter Da’Ja Monique Barnette. Parents: Willie and Viola Mastin Battle. Siblings: Brother, Harry Battle and sister, Alice Jackson

Please join us in celebrating her life on Friday, May 29th, 2026, at New Bethel Primitive Baptist Church 3880 Dayton Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44052.  Visitation will be from 10-11 AM and immediately followed by Homegoing services.  Interment will take place at Elmwood Cemetery 640 North Ridge Rd. Lorain, Ohio 44053.

The family would like to thank Cleveland Clinic Main Campus physicians and nursing staff who were involved in her care and all those she loved and touched for their compassion and support.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
