Donald Wicks Obituary

Life, Legend & Legacy of Donald Edward Wicks

Donald Edward Wicks, affectionately known as “Don,” was born in Elyria, OH, on October 13, 1934 and transitioned on April 1, 2025. He was the youngest of eleven siblings and a beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and father-figure to many cousins and friends.

Don graduated from Oberlin High School and pursued his education at West Virginia State University, where he was pursuing a career as a physical education teacher. He excelled at athletics, running track, boxing, and playing semi-pro football. His love of music spanned over 60 years, at one point giving him the opportunity to travel on the road and play with a band. Instead, he decided to start his own band called “The Don Wicks Combo.” Don played for a gospel group called “Hope” at Wesley United Methodist Church as well as other local churches.

He also enjoyed playing at events and large gatherings such as luaus and parties for family and friends. Beyond his musical and athletic talents, Don was a builder, constructing his own home in 1960. In 1964, he moved into his home with his wife Cora, and four of their nine sons. Their love spanned nearly seven decades, and they would have celebrated 70 years of marriage on June 13, 2025.

Don was preceded in death by his parents: John H. Wicks and Anna Wicks (Lawson); siblings: John Wicks Jr., Leo Wicks, Floyd Wicks, Arthene Lawson, Wanda Nance, Ruth Lawson, Mildred Higgins, Virginia Gibson, Naomi Rowe, and Mirenda Sanders; granddaughter Shareka Donald.

Don leaves behind a family of love and legacy, and is survived by his wife, Cora J. Wicks, nine sons: Monty C. (Loretta), Micci E. (Judith), Martino J., Mycal A. (Barbara), Myron J. (Kelly), Mario L. (Sheryl), Maxwell D. (Linda), Matthias D., and Merlin A. (Heather), 23 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Don Wicks lived a full, remarkable, and blessed life. His love for his family and his community will be forever cherished.
