Carolyn Russell Obituary

Carolyn Towner Russell of Lorain unexpectedly passed away on April 11, 2026. She was born on September 28th, 1949, in Mobile AL. She was a graduate of Central High School, in Mobile, AL, class of 1967. She then traveled to Lorain, Ohio where she became proud graduate of St. Joseph's School of Nursing.

Carolyn was a dedicated employee of Ohio Extended Care Center for over 30 years working as a nurse, scheduler, unit supervisor and staff educator. While there, she positively impacted the lives of her co-workers, residents, and family members. Many of the people she met there became lifelong friends and extended family members. Carolyn was a member of the Red Hat Society, Hot Sassy Mamas Section. She enjoyed her time with the group, having meals, socializing, and visiting local attractions. Carolyn also belonged to the Real Golden Girls Social Group, based on the hit 80's television show. She embodied the role of Blanche, the quick-witted diva of the group. They spent their time crafting, going to the movies, and having lunches/dinners together.

Carolyn was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Lorain, OH for over 45 years. While there she committed her time and energy to the Sunday School program where she taught classes and served as a Superintendent along with her husband Alphonse. Carolyn also dedicated her time to teaching Vacation Bible School and working with the youth whenever possible. Carolyn was never in the choir, but you could always hear her singing from the congregation.

In her free time, Carolyn could be found playing solitaire, reading her Bible or watching her favorite television game shows. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she worked tirelessly to make it special for her children and family. She especially loved to watch Hallmark Christmas movies which she then would critique the plot for hours with her sisters. She also loved listening to her favorite football teams play, The Baltimore Ravens and University of Alabama, Roll Tide Roll! Carolyn loved to visit tea rooms and spent her most relaxing time sipping tea and operating as the unofficial neighborhood watch.

She will be deeply missed by her husband of nearly 58 years, Alphonse Sr., daughters Antoinetta and Tanika, son Alphonse Jr. and bonus son Alex Towner all of Lorain. Grandchildren Ja'Mya, Steve Jr, Stephen and Alonzo and great-grandsons Jaziel and Tony. Sisters Brenda Towner of Lorain, Cynthia Towner of Mobile AL, Doris Pogue of Mobile, AL and Joyce Rivers of Texas. Brother Alexis Towner of Mobile, AL and a special brother Bishop Dennis R. Johnson of Lorain and special daughter DeeDee Lovett of Lorain. Her Godchildren Damon Smith, Herman Smith and Annaneia Williams. A host of nieces, nephews and special friends will also feel the loss of her departure.

She was preceded in death by her loving parents Ludie and Iola Towner (nee Moore), son Steve Bradley, brothers Ludie Jr, Chauncey and Glover Towner.

Friends may call on Saturday April 25th, 2026, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church 1516 East 30th St. Lorain, OH 44055 at 9am until time of service at 11am.
