Carl R. Gettis transitioned this life on Sunday August 13, 2023 surrounded by his love ones. Carl R. Gettis was born September 6, 1946 in St. Louis, Missouri to his parents Earsel Sherrod-Gettis and Early Gettis. He later moved to Oberlin, Ohio where he attended Oberlin High School. Carl was an avid sports fan and especially loved the Pittsburgh Steelers. He loved to travel and spend time with his family. Carl was known for his eye for fashion and style. He loved engaging with people and he was known for his tremendous personality and quick wit. Carl retired in 2014 from a 35 year career as a Patient Transporter at University Hospital Elyria (EMH) where he was well known and respected. Following retirement, Carl found a part time job at Spectrum School Transportation Services in Lorain, Ohio until his time of illness in March 2023. He attended and was an active member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Elyria under the leadership of Pastor Alfred Warren, where he served on the Male Chorus and Senior Choir. He later moved his membership to Mt. Zion in Lorain, Ohio. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife and life partner of 27 years Stacy Gettis, his 3 sons Stephen Gettis (Soniqua), Kenneth Gettis (Raquel) both of Elyria and Jordon Daniels of Lorain. 3 daughters, Carla, Victoria, and Malissa Gettis all of Elyria. 4 grandchildren Kaleb Gettis, Sean Gettis, Grant Gettis and Indiyah Rose Daniels. His brothers Robert Earl Gettis (Elyria), Early Gettis Jr (East St. Louis) and William Gettis (Mississippi), surviving Aunt Verna Bowen (Mississippi), stepsons Darrius Daniels and Tajh Donald (Destiny), his former wife and loving mother of his 5 oldest children Meryla Gettis (Lloyd), and a host of family and friends.
The viewing will be held at Second Baptist Church 427 Chapman Ln Elyria, Oh on Wednesday August 23rd, 2023, from 4p-7p and Thursday August 24th, at 10am.
Celebration of life will also be held at Second Baptist on Thursday August 24th, 2023, at 11am. Following the services the family will travel to Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria, Oh. The repass will be held at Second Baptist Church Hall from 1:30pm-3:30pm.
