Bertha J Rice

Bertha J. Rice was born on March 23, 1930, in Columbus MS.  She was born to the union of Marcellus Gregory and Susie Hopkins Gregory, after completing high school in Columbus Mississippi, she moved to Fayetteville North Carolina, where she lived for several years, from there, she moved to Chicago, Illinois until later, moving to Lorain Ohio where she married the love of her life of 30 years.  

Bertha was gainfully employed for over 30 years in the food industry.  She was an advocate for the feline species where she fed and cared for them for many years, she left no strays behind. 

Bertha J. Rice departed this life on Thursday, July 27, 2023, following a brief illness.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 30 years, Unice W. Rice Sr.; her father Marcellus Gregory, her mother Susie (Hopkins) Gregory; sisters: Mary Williams, Velma Brown, Clendella Wright, Lizzie Gregory, Alma Watson, Annie Gregory; a brother, James Gregory; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Greenhill, and a step-grandson Jasmine Earl Ward.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her caregivers: Mia Noble, Nia Noble, and Nancy Noble; stepsons: William Frank (Alice) Rice, of Signal Hill, California, Sammie (Ethel) Connor, of Columbus, Mississippi, Unice Jr. (Retta) Rice, of Snellville, Georgia, Rodney Lamar (Marauda) Rice, of Lithonia, Georgia; stepdaughters: Dorothy Rice Thomas, of Powder Springs, Georgia, Barbara (Danny) Wade, of Powder Springs, Georgia, Carol Jean Rice, of Dallas, Georgia.  16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. 

The funeral service will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday, August 9, 2023, it will be held in The Carter’s Funeral Home Chapel, 3001 Elyria Ave., Lorain OH  44055.  Rev. Frank Gilchrest, Eulogist.
