Anner Brown Obituary

Mrs. Anner Ruth Brown (nee Vickers) was born on April 2, 1927, to the late Will Vickers and Anna Cross in Geiger, Alabama.  She departed this life on Monday, November 13, 2023, at Ames Family Hospice in Westlake, Ohio.

She met and married Paul Brown, Sr. and they moved to Mobile, AL.  Following the call of the great migration they moved to Elyria, Ohio where jobs were plentiful, following Paul’s cousins.  Anner Ruth obtained work in Elyria and surrounding areas working as a domestic and farm worker.  She was the mother of six living children and managed their education along with other activities.
Upon arriving in Elyria, she united with Mt. Nebo P. B. Church under the leadership of Rev. William Hale.  She was an active and faithful member of Mt. Nebo for many years.  Later, she moved her membership and became one of the founding members of True Vine P. B. Church.  Mrs. Brown was active in many ministries of True Vine until her health began to fail.  Her activities included being a Mother of the Church, a member of WinGS (Women in Godly Services), Pastor’s Aide and of course, the kitchen committee.  She was an excellent cook who could put together a meal for ten or 100 with great speed, grace and ease.   Her most popular dishes were her Fried Corn and Lemon Cake!

Mother Brown was an avid walker, active in the community and could always provide a listening ear to anyone.  She was always willing to share the little that she had with many. Over the years she was a member of a Garden Club (meeting in Riverside Homes), Just Among Others (JAO, meeting at the Elyria YWCA), and The Alabama Social Club (composed of families that moved from Alabama to Lorain County).  She was presented with the Sojourner Truth Award in 1995 by National Association Negro Business and Professional Women. Mother Brown was also recognized in 2017 as a Silver Fox by the Lorain County Section of National Council of Negro Women.

She leaves to mourn her memory, Sons:  Paul, Jr., Robert A. (Bobby), (wife Paula), and Jacky C. Brown, Sr., (wife Brenda).  Daughters:  Shirley J. Brown Reeder, Joyce A. Brown and Sharon D. Furcron (husband, James).  Ten Grandchildren:  Larry Jr. and Kareema Reeder, Kirstyn Mayden, Shirley Sherise Ladson, Jakecia Durham, Derrick Brown, Jacky C. Brown, Jr., J. Russell, Blake and Steven Furcron and twelve great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews, including her brothers’ children, who had a special place in her heart.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Brown, Sr., her daughter Pauline in infancy, her brothers Eli (Snook), and Jimmy Vickers, Sr.  and her Great Grandson, Zyree Ladson.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 19 from 5-8:00 p.m. at True Vine P. B. Church, 737 W. 18th St., Elyria, Ohio.  Personal reflections can be expressed at 7:00 p.m.  Services will be held at the church, on Monday, November 20 with visitation at 10:30 a.m. and funeral beginning at 11:00 a.m.  Elder James R. Furcron, Jr. is Pastor and will officiate.   Eulogy by Minister Jacky C. Brown, Sr.

Memorial contributions, if desired, can be made to the Paul and Anner R. Brown Legacy Fund at the Community Foundation of Lorain County, 9080 Leavitt Rd., Elyria, OH 44035.
