Lula M. Garrett (nee Beatty) of Lorain transitioned home to be with the Lord on March 5, 2017 at New Life Hospice in Lorain, Ohio following a brief illness. She was born in Tuscaloosa, AL and moved to Lorain in 1970. She was a graduate of Fayette County Training School and attended Selma University in Alabama. She received her Bachelor of Science degree at Alabama State University and her Master’s Degree from Indiana University. She completed additional studies at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, and was a graduate of Teachers College of Columbia University. She was employed with the Lorain City Schools System and taught at Hawthorne-Boone School, Admiral King and was Career Education Coordinator for many years.. She was a former First Lady of Friendship Baptist Church of Lorain under the leadership of her late husband Pastor Walter J. Garrett where she was a Sunday school teacher, supervisor of the Joy Bell Choir and was involved in many other activities and programs. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and a member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators. She was an avid sports fan of college basketball, she enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She will be sadly missed by daughters, Janice Denise Beatty, Stella (Gilbert) Francis, and Betty (Donald) Clinton of AZ, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Sisters, Dorothy (Cornelius) Sheppard, Nancy Anise Thompson, Elizabeth Wright and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. She is preceded in death by her husbands, James W. Beatty and Pastor Walter J. Garrett; parents Joseph H. and Fannie V. Thompson, sister, Fannie Vandella Davis, brothers, Pank L. Thompson and Joseph Thompson, Jr. Friends may call Friday, March 10, 2017 from 4:30 p.m. until time of service at 6:00 p.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church, 2160 Reeves Ave, Lorain, Ohio. The Reverend John Jackson will officiate. Carter Funeral Home Chapel, 3001 Elyria Ave, Lorain is in charge of local arrangements. Final home going service will take place at First Baptist Church of Fayette, Alabama on Tuesday March 14, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. and will be managed by Nelson Funeral Home, located at 3659 Highway 171 N. Fayette, AL. Burial will take place at Fayette Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Friendship Baptist Church, Lorain in honor of the Lula M.
