Loretta O’Dair Mahone, 76, of Elyria, Ohio, gracefully transitioned into eternity on Sunday, April 14th, 2024. Born on December 5th, 1947, in the same loving community, Loretta remained a lifelong resident of Elyria.
A proud alumna of Midview High School, Class of 1966, Loretta embarked on a career that began at Higbee's, followed by a position at Harshaw Chemical. Her profound dedication to the Elyria school system was evident through her years of service as a secretary at Franklin Elementary, Elyria High, and Westwood Junior High School. Loretta concluded her professional journey with the Lorain County Urban League, leaving a legacy of commitment and community service upon her retirement.
Loretta was a devout servant of God and a cherished member of the Second Baptist Church of Elyria for over 50 years. Her spiritual journey included joyous participation in the youth choir and later, the gospel choir, where she uplifted many with her melodious voice. She fulfilled the vision of starting a family bible study several days a week, where she participated until her transition.
Her hobbies were as diverse as her interests, including singing, bowling, cooking, baking, sewing, traveling, and was an enthusiast of movies. However, the centerpiece of her life was undoubtedly her family and close friends. In 1969, she married her beloved husband, Argene Mahone, and together they nurtured a family for over 54 years.
Loretta’s memory will be forever cherished by her husband, Argene Mahone; her children, Chris (Jennifer) Mahone of Port Saint Lucie, FL, and Kellie Wilson of Upper Marlboro, MD; her adored granddaughters, Jasmyne, Jordan, Michal, and Christel; her siblings, Gloria (Forrest) Bullocks and Thurman Taylor, her Goddaughter Angela Ligon of North Ridgeville; and a vibrant host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. and Cordie Taylor; brothers James (Big Tate) Taylor and Melvin (Sharon) Taylor; sister Theresa (Wilbur K.) Allen; and sister-in-law Donna Taylor.
As we bid farewell to Loretta, we hold close the warmth of her presence, the resonance of her laughter, and the unwavering strength of her spirit. She will be dearly missed, yet her light will perpetually guide us.
A viewing will be held at 10am with a Celebration of Life to follow at 11am at Second Baptist Church 427 Chapman Ln Elyria, OH on Monday April 22nd, 2024.
