Jimmie Lee Giles Jones

Jimmie Lee Giles Jones, age 88, passed away February 15, 2016, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Reba J. Carroll and Howard Carroll after a lengthy illness; her other children, Andy O. Jones and Regina L. Jones where also present at her bedside.
 
Born on March 27, 1927, in Sumter County, Alabama; Mrs. Jones is the only child of Robert Giles and Ophelia J. Merriweather Giles.  In 1946, Mrs. Jones entered Alabama A. and M. University. In December of 1946, she married Oliver James Jones.
 
Mr. and Mrs. Jones graduated from Alabama A. and M. University in 1950 and settled in Elyria, Ohio in 1953. Although Mrs. Jones’ permanent home continued to be Elyria, Ohio; in her later years, she traveled to Atlanta, Georgia and Alexandria, Virginia for extended periods of time.
 
Mrs. Jones’ professional career began as a teacher at Lucy Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia from 1950 - 1951.  From 1956 - 1968, Mr. Jones was employed by the Midview School District and in 1968, Mrs. Jones moved to the Elyria City School system where she taught sixth grade at Hamilton Elementary and Franklin Elementary schools, respectively.  After 33 years in education, Mrs. Jones retired from the Elyria City School system in 1988.
 
Mrs. Jones’ community and civic involvement included: serving as the first secretary for the Elyria Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), President of the Elyria Club and Life member in the Negro Business and Professional Women’s (NBPW) Club. 
 
After her retirement in 1988, Mrs. Jones was appointed to a four-year term as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Elyria Public Library and was an active member of the Lorain County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated where; she served as Vice President, Treasurer and Regional Membership Trainer. 
Left to celebrate Mrs. Jones’ life and legacy is her son, Andy Oliver Jones and daughters Reba J. Carroll (Howard) and Regina L. Jones; grandchildren Sandy McGill (Tyrone), Andy Oliver Jones, Jr., and Tanisha Jones-Towns; eight great-grandchildren, six great, great-grandchildren.
 
She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver J. Jones; daughter, Brenda J. Jones; and her parents Robert and Ophelia J. Giles.
   
Service of Celebration, Wednesday, February 24, 2016 in the Second Baptist Church, 427 Chapman Lane, Elyria for viewing at 9:00 am, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. - Omega Omega Service (Open to the public) from 10:00 am – 10:30 am, Family Hour 10:30 am – 11:30 am until time of service at 11:30 am.  The Reverend Dr. Carl P. Small, Pastor will officiate and Minister Rochell Corn will Eulogize.  Burial in Brookdale Cemetery.
